If you’ve ever fancied competing against other dry stone wallers, then now’s your chance!

The Yorkshire Open Dry Stone Walling Championship

……Is moving to a new location, and it’s tipped to be better than ever!!

Organised by the West & South Yorkshire branches of the Dry Stone
Walling Association, it is taking place at the Emley Show in Huddersfield,
on Saturday 1st August 2009, YORKSHIRE DAY.

Due to the recent relocation of the showground, it has enabled the
Open Walling Championship to take place at this new location, for the first time in the competition’s history.

As well as trophies, their will be over £600 in prize money and entries will be classed as Professionals, Amateurs, Novices, Schools or Young Farmers.

This competition has been supported in the past by wallers from as far afield as the Cotswolds, Wales and Southern Scotland and once again we
are hopeful for a good entry.

Chairman’s Annual Report 21st October 2008

It has again been a very busy year for the branch, firstly with monthly meetings and the branch A.G.M. being held at the Cock Inn in Barnsley, as well as the Psalter and Porter Brook in Sheffield. With well in excess of a hundred attendees over the year, it is continuing to be a great success. I feel at this point that we must thank all of the staff, as nothing has ever seemed to be too much trouble.

Once again, the enthusiasm of the committee has not only contributed to a sound basis for us as a whole, but has also helped push forward our branch’s opinions. With regards to our branch involvement at a national level, I feel that we have made huge progress.

In November 2007, we successfully hosted the National AGM and Members Weekend at Wentworth Castle. The majority of the feedback that we received showed that it was considered one the best that had ever taken place. The election that took place here resulted in three members of our branch succeeding to positions within the National Management Committee, these being Branch Representative, Elected Member and National Deputy Chairman.

We also now have a representation on the National Officer’s sub-committee, the sub-committee looking at the Five Year Plan for the association, and three of our branch members are active within the newly formed Membership Team.

To try and support an initiative for branches to help raise funds for the national association, we also organised a 40^th Anniversary Clothing range, with all of the profits been donated to the national body’s funds.

We have had mixed success with our demonstrations, where shows at Birdwell, Emley with the West Yorkshire Branch, Norton, Broomhead, and Penistone went ahead without any problems. However, Whirlow Hall Farm Fair did not due to the date being changed without our knowledge.

A further problem that we seem to have had is with regards to training. A major drop in training attendees could be partially due to free courses, which have been provided within our area by organisations such as the Wentworth Castle Trust. Although we have had some members arising from this training, I feel that a way forward with this would be to try and forge a partnership with these bodies. In addition, I feel that not being able to offer membership with our training course fees is something that we should investigate once again.

Since our last branch AGM we have hosted three certification days, two of which were at our new Hoylandswaine centre, with a third taking place this coming weekend on 25^th October 2008. It was also used this year in the making of the new Dry Stone Walling DVD produced by Kirklees Council and the West Yorkshire Branch.

The Examination Centre at Hoylandswaine continues to progress and evolve, where we are now capable of potentially holding several Master Craftsman, four Level 3 Advanced, six Level 2 Intermediate and well over a dozen Level 1 Initial timed examinations at the same time.

I for one am confident that in future, it may become one of the biggest examination centres in the country, and as part of our expansion plans, we also now have the use of on-site classroom facilities with electricity and a site portaloo.

Whilst I feel the focus for the coming year should be on training, I also feel that a new project would be beneficial, and the suggestion I have could be the creation of a social area with a barbecue and seating for example at Hoylandswaine. I also think that more of our membership should be encouraged to take part in our demonstrations, as this has been shown to help prepare them for potential examinations. Lastly, I feel that we should further ‘source out’ more of the roles and responsibilities of the branch secretary, examples for creation could be Publicity Officer, Shop Coordinator, etc.

At this point I feel that a special thanks must go to a National Elected Member as well as our Branch Secretary Les Young, who is sadly stepping down from both these roles. Being the former Branch Secretary of West Yorkshire, I for one realise the tremendous efforts that Les shown to these roles. Newer members may not be aware, but his knowledge, contacts and personal drive, has resulted in the creation of our blogsite, the setting up of both our Branch and 40^th anniversary clothing range, as well as coordinating the sponsorship for the National AGM.

He also persuaded the Y.T.V. presenter Ian Clayton to be our after dinner speaker, and secured a heavily discounted booking for the O.F.B soul band.

Les all I can say is that you are going to be one hell of an act to try and follow, and I hope that you will still be able to help our branch where possible.

To conclude, throughout the last year we have worked well as a team. I feel that the efforts and enthusiasm of our branch officers, committee members and also some of our newer members that have got involved in various events, have helped to improve the profile of our branch. No activities take place without someone helping to organise them, and they cannot run without members, giving what time they have to help.

I would like to end once again by thanking everyone and more importantly, their partners, for allowing them to become an officer, committee or branch member, and for their valuable contribution to this year’s programme, and feel confident that we will continue to build on our success.

On Saturday we held DSWA examinations at our examination site at Hoylandswaine, South Yorkshire. We had 6 eager souls taking their DSWA/LANTRA Examinations - 3 Level 1 entrants, one Level 2 and two entrants for Advanced.

Luckily, and probably due to the high winds, we escaped without getting wet - until we adjourned to the pub that is!

The DSWA National AGM and Members Weekend

Our Branch had the pleasure of hosting the Dry Stone Walling Association AGM and Members Weekend at Wentworth Castle near Barnsley. This was the first time that this momentous occasion for UK wallers had been held in Yorkshire since the DSWA's conception 39 years ago.

Months of preparation suddenly culminated as myself and Alan put out direction signs from the M1 on the Friday night guiding DSWA Members to Wentworth Castle. We expected a few members to arrive that night but most would arrive during Saturday.

Saturday arrived with a thin drizzle wetting those branch members who turned up to help with the running of the weekend. We enjoyed a substantial breakfast in the Castle dining room which somehow tasted better in the sumptuous surroundings. It's not often you can raise your eyes to the roof and see lovely paintings adorning the ceiling!

The first meeting of the day was the National Committee Meeting held in Holme Farm which is a recently restored annex to the castle. Meantime branch members guided guests to their rooms and informed them where to catch the transport to our first visit of the weekend, the National Mining Museum. Members who visited the museum experienced an underground tour of the mine which is part of the museum and got to see dry stone walling miners style where the miners had packed the stone which was a by product of their excavations. One of our members apparently liked the tour so much that he decided to stay and went missing underground!!

A big thank you to the staff of the National Mining Museum for their help in making this tour possible and a great experience for our members.

Attention then turned to the AGM which was held in the renovated St John's Church which is deconsecrated and stands in the castle grounds and was once the, almost, private church of the Fitzwillam family.

Helen soon got down to selling DSWA wares before the meeting commenced.

After the meeting members had the opportunity to see an exhibition of miniature building made entirely from stone by Malcolm Debenham. Malcolm and his wife Rene, had given up their day to display their models and explain the techniques involved in making them. Quite a lot of DSWA members have had a go at building miniature dry stone walls and could fully appreciate the skill which is involved in making these buildings.

A big thank you to Malcolm and Rene for a fascinating insight into their skilled craft.

With the formal part of the day over, it was time for dinner in the Blue Room of Wentworth Castle where we were joined by some of the sponsors of the weekend.

We were fortunate to obtain the services of Ian Clayton as our after dinner speaker. Ian is the presenter of YTV's My Yorkshire. His speech was very funny with his reminiscence of his youth in Yorkshire which was enjoyed by all and sundry and surprisingly there was no need for the services of a translator!

After his speech Ian very kindly signed copies of his book 'Bringing It All Back Home'. We held a collection in aid of the Billie Clayton Trust which Ian set up in memory of his daughter Billie who tragically died in a canoeing accident. We managed to donate £160 on the evening which will be used to buy musical instruments for local children. Signed copies by Ian and our National Chairman Richard Love of the program of events/sponsors list will be available for any members wishing to have a momento of the evening - in return for a small donation to the Billie Clayton Trust!

A big thank you to Ian for his services.

The evening continued with the OFB Band providing the music. We were joined by some of the students from the Northern College who are resident at the Castle. Unfortunately we don't have any photo's of the band and the dancing which ensued as we were all on the dance floor strutting our stuff!! It was a brilliant performance with some classic soul and dance music which was enjoyed by almost eveyone.

A big thank you to the OFB Band. You certainly won a few more fans that night!

Sunday found us visiting the Yorkshire Sculpture Park to see some of Andy Goldsworthys art using dry stone walls and walling techniques. They were built by DSWA members and are a great piece of walling.

We were guided around the park by Alan who is the main man at the Park and his assistant Claire. A big thank you to them for the interesting tour and giving up their Sunday morning for our members.

After the tour it was time for members to make their way home, while I headed off to the Cherry Tree at High Hoyland for a hair of the dog!

A big thank you to branch members Owen Jones, Don Jones, Alan Devonport, Gary Helliwell, Mick Booth, John Alston and David Longden for their help in everything to do with the weekend, without which it would not have been such a success.

Chairman’s Annual Report 2007

It has again been a very busy year for the branch. Our monthly meetings and A.G.M. at the Cock Inn, Birdwell, Barnsley have attrected well in excess of a hundred attendees over the year and is continuing to go from strength to strength. I feel at this point that we must thank all of the staff of the Cock Inn as nothing ever seems to be too much trouble.

Once again, the enthusiasm of the committee, a full contingent of officers, and national management representative, have not only contributed to a sound basis for us as a whole, but has also helped push forward the branch’s opinions. I am sure that this is what helped swing the vote, for us to host the National Members Weekend and A.G.M. this coming November at Wenthworth Castle.

It became clear as the year progressed, that due to the low number of instructors we had, as well as cancelled shows due to bad weather, we were not going to be able offer as many courses. However, these factors seemed to work in our favour, by allowing more time for new members to get involved in our two, ongoing major projects for the year:

Firstly, the John Lackenby Memorial Steps/Open Air Classroom, at the Whirlow Hall Farm Trust, which has proved to be a great success.

Secondly, the new Examination & Training Centre at Hoylandswaine, which is nearing completion, the first exams are due to take place on the 27^th October. Another promotional feature for the site is a new Dry Stone Walling Dvd, which is being partially filmed there, and should hopefully be unveiled at the National Members Weekend.

I would at this point like to thank Will and Nina at Whirlow Hall Farm, as well as John Helliwell at Hoylandswaine. Without these people we could not have succeeded with our aims.

I feel that the branch, focusing on retaining existing members has not only proved to be successful, but membership has steadily increased by around 30% this year, and overall by 300% from 2005.

During the year, we have had two members from our branch, gain their Instructor Level 1 Certificate, which has increased our instructors to five, and also, three more members have attended the advanced course. This means that for the first time we have Instructor Level 2 trainers within the branch.

We again had competitors in the Yorkshire Open Walling Competition that took place in June. There were three members of the branch who entered, which resulted in a first prize, and two seconds in three of the four classes.

One of our branch members has also taken part in an international scholarship programme in Corsica. His successful training has subsequently led him onto further work in Ardenne, France.

Despite the weather, two of our major demonstrations still took place as well as smaller local Galas:

Penistone Show; over 24,000 visitors with 10 branch members present.

Whirlow Hall Farm Fair; over 6,000 visitors with 5 branch members present.

Special thanks must go to the West Yorkshire branch for loaning their mini marquee as well as allowing us make use of their gazebo and show material. Also to Eddy and Rob who organised stone for the Whirlow Hall Farm Fair.

Thanks must go out to all those that have taken on extra roles within the branch, such as:

I feel the focus for the coming year should be to again refocus on training, especially at Whirlow Hall Farm. Our support next year can only help to build on their 30^th Anniversary. However, more immediate is the National Members Weekend, on the 24^th & 25^th November at Wentworth Castle, Barnsley. WE NEED AS MANY MEMBERS AS POSSIBLE TO HELP OUT, SO PLEASE CONTRIBUTE WHERE YOU CAN.

Throughout the year we have again worked well as a team. It has been a true team effort with officers, committee members and some of our newer members getting involved in the organisation of events. No activities take place without someone initially organising them, and they cannot run without members, giving what time they have to help.

I would like to end once again by thanking everyone and more importantly, their spouses, for allowing them to become an officer, committee or branch member, and for their valuable contribution to this year’s programme, and feel confident that we will continue to build on the success of the last two years.

Members of our Branch have been hard at work under the guidance and co-ordination of Ed Smith, Rob Wakefield and John Alston to build a set of steps at Whirlow Hall Farm as a memorial to our late Chairman, John Lackenby.

Whirlow Hall Farm is an educational centre used by children from throughout the South Yorkshire/ Derbyshire area. The purpose of the memorial is not only as an asthetic feature but it is also for teachers to sit their class while they teach their children about the farm, its animals and their welfare. I'm sure John would approve of this fitting memorial and its purpose.

Why build this memorial at Whirlow Hall Farm I hear you ask! Whirlow Hall Farm as well as being an education centre is also one of the examination and practice centres for the South Yorkshire DSWA which John and our members have developed over several years.

There have been many members who have given up their time to build the memorial so a BIG thank you to them. Indeed, an old member, Dave Crapper, came out of retirement to help build John's memorial.

Thank you to Will and Nina who run Whirlow Hall Farm and who have given the Branch every assistance in the contruction of Johns memorial.

I think you'll agree that the memorial is a fitting tribute to John and to the skills of our members who built it.

Dry Stone Walling Association AGM

We are delighted to announce that the South Yorkshire Branch will be hosting the 2007 DSWA AGM at Wentworth Castle on the weekend of 24th and 25th November. Wentworth Castle is a grade 1 listed building set in magnificent gardens. Not only will the DSWA AGM be held in Wentworth Castle but members staying over can also stay in the Castle.

DSWA members will have the opportunity to visit the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the National Mining Museum. Guided tours will be given at both venues.

A full itinerary of events will be published on this site later in the year.

Wentworth Castle and the Stainbrough Estate

‘One of the nation’s most sublime parkland estates.’

One of the most important historic gardens in the North of England, this hidden gem from the 18th century opens fully for the first time in spring 2007. Not to be confused with the nearby Wentworth Woodhouse (and that’s a history lesson in itself regarding family feuds), This is the also home to the Northern College, an adult education resendential centre.
It captured the nation's imagination after being a runner up on the BBC TV series ‘Restoration’. Both the exterior of this magnificent stately home, and the secret gardens of the Earls of Strafford are being carefully restored in a major project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Most important with regards to walling is the Ha-Ha, plus accompanying features, such as the ‘Dry Stone Clapper Bridge’ and the Garden Features in the Wentworth Castle Folly, (which is so big that there are plans to host open air events in that area alone).
These are being beautifuly restored by Nigel Goody, David Griffiths, Simon Lumb and other members of the D.S.W.A. but of most importance is that the Ha-Ha is reputed to be the oldest on record at a mere 305 years old!
Rare formal gardens have been rediscovered, National Collections of Rhododendrons, Camellias and Magnolias enhanced, and over 100,000 bulbs planted throughout the 10 acre garden to create a carpet of colour.
Many of the 26 listed buildings and monuments across what is the only Grade 1 listed parkland and garden are being repaired and opened for visitors. With its atmospheric views, woodland walks and majestic follies - including a dramatic viewing platform at the top of a castle folly 600 feet above sea level - there is something for everyone to enjoy in the gardens all year round.
Beyond the gardens, over 50 acres of historic parkland can be explored via the Monument Trail; a new 2 mile path taking you through the beautiful countryside of Stainborough and linking several restored follies and native woods.
At any convenient time during the weekend, a tour of these splendid features on the estate can be arranged, at no cost….

Location and Ease of Access
Northern College is located around 4 miles from both junctions 36 & 37 of the M1 (and only three roads away), and close to the A628 from the Woodhead Pass and Manchester. It is also serviced by the Sheffield-Huddersfield Northern Rail Link (changeable at Barnsley Interchange, 4 miles away) with the local stations being Dodworth and also Silkstone Common, both approximately 2 miles away.
It should be noted that that the South Yorkshire Branch has already arranged a shuttle service over the weekend between both local stations and Wentworth Castle.

South Yorkshire Branch Examination Centre (4 miles away)
Located on the A628 (Woodhead Pass Road) in Hoylandswaine, this is our new training development project for the branch. Due to be completed in mid 2007, our centre will enable all Lantra and DSWA levels of certification to take place, including a vast array of features. Whirlow Hall Farm, Sheffield (16 miles away)
Just 30 minutes drive from Northern College, This Educational Farm Trust is where our branch also holds training courses, practice meets and examinations. It is also the place where a memorial is presently under construction to our former chairman, John Lackenby.

The National Coal Mining Museum for England (13 miles away)
Come & see dry stone walling underground
The 17 acre site with a unique collection of buildings, displays and activities that reveal the hidden world of mining through the centuries; learn about mining methods and machinery, the miners and their families.
Wearing a hard hat and battery lamp, descend 140metres underground to learn how coal was hewn and moved to the surface. Here you will also see how dry stone walls played an important part in the mining industry.
New galleries show how miners lived, worked and relaxed. Take a ride on the locomotive, explore the Nature Trail and meet the retired pit ponies. Refuel in the Café, and pick up souvenirs in the gift shop.
On Saturday 24th November, prior to the AGM, we have already arranged for a full underground group tour for any number of our members and guests, plus we can arrange travel at a very nominal cost.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) (9 miles away)
Essential viewing is the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, just off Junction 38 off the M1. Spread over the beautiful Bretton Country Park we will find works of notable repute, including the abstract work of Barbara Hepworth's in 'Family of Man', 'Molecule Man 1+1+1' by Jonathan Borofsky and Elisabeth Frink's 'Running Man'. Frink's work is mostly figurative and mostly male figures in bronze. The person who regularly ‘pops up’ within the dry stone walling fraternity is Andy Goldsworthy, who also has a number of exhibits here, and on the weekend of 24th November, an Andy Goldsworthy day is planned by the YSP.
On Sunday 25th November it is our intention to provide a visit to here, where a full guided tour of the sculptures and walling features of most interest to fellow wallers will occur. Plus again transport can be arranged at a very nominal fee.

The Support from Other Branches & Possible Sponsorship
As part of this proposal for hosting the AGM and Members Weekend, we have liased with three of our neighbouring branches, West Yorkshire, Otley & Yorkshire Dales and the Derbyshire Branch.
The attitude towards the S.Y Branch hosting this event, and their promise of support in all areas has been extremely encouraging. Examples of this are W.Y.and also O&Y.D. offering help in any aspect required. In addition, Joanne Walker from the Derbshire branch is already researching several avenues of funding that may be available, which are specifically ‘ringfenced’ for South Yorkshire.
Evidence of her succes speaks for itself; Joanne has managed to raise around £6000 of grant money to help fund the Derbyshire Branch Anniversary programme this year.

Barnsley Tourist Information
Plenty of history, on the industrial revolution, with nods to engineers like Joseph Locke (1805-1860) who worked with Stephenson but made his own name building railways in the UK - Locke Park in Barnsley was donated to the people by his wife. Not to be confused with the Irish Tenor Josef Locke.
Forget the grim impression you may have of this former mining/linen/glass manufacturing Yorkshire town…… This is just some of what you are missing!

The Trans - Pennine Trail (½ mile away)
The Trans Pennine Trail passes less than half a mile from Wentworth Castle, and is a multi-user Trail for walkers, cyclists, in parts for horse riders and limited mobility users. It passes through or close to many of the major cities and towns of northern England - a quarter of the UK population live within 20 miles (35 km) of the Trail, so it is a great resource that everyone can enjoy in a variety of ways. Here you'll find information and advice to help you get out and explore the TPT. The trail links into Barnsley on railway paths, whilst the main routes offer different options for travelling.

Worsbrough Mill and Country Park (3½ miles away)
A Worsbrough Mill was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 and local historian Robert Shawland-Ball states that a "tenuous but continuous documentary record can be traced from then to 1625...A mill was a very important part of the feudal pattern of life and settlement and thus tended to remain on the same site if that site was a satisfactory one".
The New Mill originally contained a Watt beam engine which was replaced in 1922 by a 1911 model Hornsby hot bulb oil engine that still functions, but is not linked to a grindstone. The building is known to have been completed 1843 but was not present on a detailed map of 1840.

Cannon Hall (5½ miles away)
Cannon Hall is a country house museum located between the villages of Cawthorne and High Hoyland north of Barnsley. The site is recorded when the Domesday Survey of 1086 was conducted, originally the home of the Spencer and later the Spencer-Stanhope family, it now houses collections of fine furniture, paintings, ceramics and glassware. It also houses the Regimental Museum of the 13th/18th Royal Hussars (Queen Mary's Own) and the Light Dragoons.

Monk Bretton Priory (5½ miles away)

Barnsley is fortunate to have within its boundary the extensive remains of a Priory, originally founded under the Cluniac order, which offers much for the visitor to appreciate. The open space of the priory grounds and the views across the wooded countryside still convey the feeling of peace and tranquility as benefited monastery life. But this belies the turbulent and often violent past of this sleeping ruin.
It was founded in 1154 as the Priory of St Mary Magdelene of Lund by Adam Fitswane, sited here on the Lund, from Old-Norse ‘lundr’ meaning a sacred woodland grove. In course of time the Priory took the name of the nearby village of Bretton to be commonly known as Monk Bretton Priory. It has again come to recent notoriety as the probable place of one of the stories of Robin Hood, (WHO BY THE WAY, WAS A YORKSHIRE LAD FROM LOXLEY, SHEFFIELD).

Elsecar Heritage Centre (6½ miles away)
Here is an exciting Antique, History & Craft Centre, hosting a range of events and offering an interesting and fun day out for all the family. The site hosts the Elsecar Steam Railway, the Living History Centre, a Victorian Classroom, Beam Engine and major events venue.
Wigfield Farm (3 miles away)
This is a real working farm, run by Barnsley College with rare breeds and small animals as well as the traditional farmyard animals. It offers a fun visit for all the family. Refreshments, cafe, souvenirs and toilets available.

RSPB Old Moor (10 miles away)
The RSPB has excelled here with extensive visitor facilities, this is a fantastic place to watch wildlife and enjoy the mixture of habitats including open water, marsh, reed beds and grasslands. There is a visitor centre and two mobility vehicles for the less mobile visitors.
Penistone (5 miles away)
One of the historic Pennine market towns. Penistone is reputed to be the Highest one in Engalnd. The traditional Retail Open Market offers everything under the sun, attracting farmers, auctioneers, locals and visitors. It is also home to the Compton Theatre Organ, the only one of its kind in the country and holds regular organ recitals. The Penistone Paramount is a traditional cinema, complete with intermission ice creams and bar; it also hosts concerts, pantomimes and shows.

Barnsley Market (4½ Miles away)
In 1249, a Royal Charter was granted to Barnsley, permitting it to hold a weekly market and annual fair. With over 300 indoor and outdoor stalls, Barnsley Market is situated in the heart of Barnsley town centre. Located next to the Transport Interchange, it offers a wide range of bargain treasures and by enjoying a bustling atmosphere, the experience of Barnsley Market should not be missed.

Sheffield Tourist Information
Sheffield's industrial history is legendary - it was once known as 'the steel capital of the world'. Museums duly pay homage to such a past, but additional to this, Sheffield has developed into a city of culture, art and entertainment. Sheffield's secret is out - this city is a contemporary haven for art lovers. A choice of beautifully lit art galleries are on offer, as well the spectacular year round Winter and Peace Gardens under their glass dome frames. With several theatres and cinemas - Sheffield has it all…

Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet (16½ miles away)
For an introduction into steel making and metal work, Abbeydale is the place to start. This site has been used for iron making for over 500 years. Here you'll find forges, water wheels, crucible furnaces and more.

Wortley Top Forge (3½ miles away)
Wortley Top Forge is an historic former ironworks originally dating back to the seventeenth century, although evidence suggests iron working took place in the vicinity as early as the fourteenth century, and lies on the River Don.
Following the final abandonment of the site in 1929, various bodies have been involved in securing the site which now forms the heart of an Industrial Museum.

Wortley Hall (3 miles away)
Wortley Hall is a stately home built in the 18th century and was the seat of the Wharncliffe family until the Second World War. During the war the hall was used by the British Army, but after 1945 its structural condition deteriorated.
In 1950 a group of local trade union activists identified the hall as a possible educational and holiday centre, and established a co-operative which succeeded in purchasing the hall for those purposes. It was formally opened in 1951 and is currently used by several trades unions and other organisations as a venue for residential training courses and other meetings, as well as for purely social gatherings.

Millennium Galleries & the Winter and Peace Gardens (13 miles away)
The Millennium Galleries venue has 5 separate galleries - displaying works not only in visual art - but also in craft and design, with a particular metal work gallery. Like the Graves it often hosts visiting exhibitions, check the website below. Permanently displayed is the Ruskin Gallery, which shows not just paintings by Ruskin, but also papers, minerals, books and architectural plastering collected by the artist

Meadowhall Shopping Centre (14 miles away)
The metropolis Sheffield shopping mecca that is the Meadowhall Shopping Centre is a key attraction conveniently located just off the M1. Doncaster & Rotherham Tourist Information
Doncaster and Rotherham are probably best known for Doncaster Racecourse, Rotherham United FC, Doncaster Rovers FC and the new International Airport, but it also has some other fascinating attractions nearby, examples of which are:-

Conisbrough Castle (16 miles away)
Dating from 1180, and famous for its association with Sir Walter Scott's novel 'Ivanhoe'. This site high up on a hill was the base of a castle as far back as 1066. The South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum (34 miles away)

Wentworth Park and Village (7 miles away)
The public rights of way through Wentworth Park have always been popular with local walkers. The highlight is the magnificent East Front of Wentworth Woodhouse (the widest house in the country!) with its equally grand stable block, but there are plenty of other buildings and sights of interest in the park. These include the famous follies of Hoober Stand, the Needles Eye Keppel's Column and the Mausoleum, plus lesser known features such as the Doric and Ionic Temples.

Rother Valley Country Park (20 miles away)
With over 300 hectares, it offers an extensive scope for many types of recreation including the water sports centre, cable water ski system, day fishing, outdoor play area, golf centre, orienteering, craft centre, cafe, visitor centre, toilets, refreshments and gift shop.

Magna Science Adventure Centre (15 miles away)
A fantastic interactive adventure through science, whether young or old. Come prepared as Magna is a 'coats on' experience. The cafe serves hot and cold food, snacks and drinks. Magna Store sells a unique range of souvenirs.

Wakefield & Pontefract Tourist Information
Wakefield and the Pontefract area have some stunning castles and some fantastic art on show in its central art gallery at Wakefield.

Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth

Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth were both born in Wakefield and both worked considerably in bronze, wood and stone sculpture. The Wakefield Art Gallery duly pays tribute to these two famous artists with the reclining figure in Elmwood (1936) by Henry Moore and early carvings by Hepworth. On the very contemporary side the gallery includes work by Matthew Smith, Paul Nash and Jacob Epstein.
Wakefield Art Gallery and the nearby Yorkshire Sculpture Park (mentioned earlier), offers a feast of exhibitions designated to the work of Barbara Hepworth. Her influence on British modernism art in the 20th century is renowned, as is her influence on Henry Moore - they were friends and studied together. There are also 9 bronze works by Henry Moore, born in nearby Castleford, on show. Magical and moving - don't miss it!

Holmfirth Tourist Information (13½ miles away)
There are shops galore in Holmfirth, where you can explore 'setted ginnels' and discover former weavers' cottages, art and craft galleries, including that of Barnsley artist Ashley Jackson. A favourite is the Indie clothes shop next door to Sid's Cafe - you have to walk through the Hardware store to get to it, so if you happen to need some snub nails or a bag of soil as well are you're trendy top you're sorted!

Last of the Summer Wine

The village serves fans well, with samples of 'Ivy's fayre' at Sid's Cafe, followed by a coach tour of the Holme Valley which takes in key locations in the series. This tour is renowned for its informative commentary, and takes in spots like the White Horse Inn, known as the Summer Wine Pub - its exterior was originally used in the series, (though the pub now used is ‘The Monkey’ in Hood Green, Barnsley, a mere one mile from Wentworth Castle.)

You can also visit 'The Last of the Summer Wine Exhibition at Scarfold, off Hollowgate, Holmfirth - Tel: 01484 681408. This exhibition is located in what was Compo's house in the series and it includes photographs and memorabilia.
Other Dry Stone Walling Attractions around West Yorkshire

Shibden Hall, Park & Dry Stone Walling Exhibit (35 miles away)

This is a permanent and unique exhibit built by the West Yorkshire Branch of the Dry Stone Walling Association in the grounds of Shibden Hall in Halifax and exemplifies all the skills of the Master Craftsman.
The exhibit draws together the highest standards of dry stone walling and interprets the characteristics and the practical applications of the craft in the landscape.
Completed in 2003, the project had the support of Johnsons Wellfield Quarries, who donated the stone, the Heritage Lottery Fund who provided a grant of £30,000, and Calderdale Council.
Working parties, practice days, workshops and training helped to create the exhibit and worked alongside Shibden's Education officers, rangers and gardeners to learn about the skill.
The spectacular conical cairns mark the top entrance to the exhibit. From the lower entrance, marked by closely dressed square-topped pillars, the path leads past a series of stiles and lunky holes through walling which gradually takes on a more relaxed field wall character until it curves upwards to the top of the site.
Within the exhibit, a circular pinfold half buried in the hillside displays the skills involved in building in a tight curve, and a set of demonstration walls show the various stages in building in dry stone. Different styles of topstone reflect the styles found in urban and rural landscapes, including half rounded topstones and "cocks and hens".

PROGRAMME OF EVENTS 2007

THE DRY STONE WALLING ASSOCIATION OF GREAT BRITAIN was founded in 1968 to ensure that the best walling craftsmanship throughout the country is preserved and promoted. It is a charitable organisation, though many of its local branches have charitable status in their own right.

It works to improve knowledge and understanding of the craft, and produces a Register of Certificated Wallers and Sources of Stone, as well as many informative leaflets on the techniques of walling and the characteristics of walls in different regions.

The South Yorkshire Branch of the Dry Stone Walling Association covers the areas around Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. However, some of its members live farther afield, and people from both the UK, and Europe have taken part in its training courses.

The training courses we operate take place throughout the year, and offer structured tuition for both men and women in an informal atmosphere.

Everyone taking part are taught the basic principles of dry stone walling, working at their own pace. All of our instructors hold the DSWA Instructors Certificate and are members of the association.

All Branch training courses and mock examinations, will also include a practice day over the weekend.

There are also two projects ongoing at the moment, the first being a memorial to our former chairman John Lackenby. This is a set of convex steps, which will have a dual role as a seating area for visiting children, at Whirlow Hall Farm, Sheffield.

Our second project is a new examination centre at Hoylandswaine, Barnsley. This is a much needed facility for the advancement of the branch, in which we will be able to offer all four of the D.S.W.A. and LANTRA levels of accreditation in our craft of dry stone walling.

We also have available a wide range of Branch Clothing, as well as tools and literature, that are offered at very reasonable prices.

The Hoylandswaine Examination Site Gets The Go Ahead!

We now have the go ahead to develop the Hoylandswaine Examination Site, which means we will have the facilities to examine our members up to Master Craftsman level. Excellent news!

The site is at Green Top Farm which is on the main A628 at Hoylandswaine, South Yorkshire..

We are starting to clear the site in preparation for building on Sunday 28^th January 2007. If any member wishes to lend a hand then you’ll be most welcome!

Annual General Meeting 2006

Chairman’s Report

It has been an extremely busy year for the branch, with the first major change being the monthly meeting at the Cock Inn, Birdwell, Barnsley. I feel at this point that we must thank all of the staff there as they have always gone out of there way since we began in January to accommodate us.

Secondly, we have established an enthusiastic committee, with a full contingent of officers. Another positive issue is that by the branch now sending a representative to the national management meetings, and pushing the branch’s opinions, we are again now been considered as a driving force within the D.S.W.A.

Also with the change in the branch constitution, it has enabled us to contact people within our boundary, and let them know what the branch now has to offer.

In February, there were three designs presented to the branch for consideration as the new branch logo, and after much deliberation, the excellent design by Tom Valentine was decided upon.

From this, Les must firstly be thanked for sourcing a very good supplier named Xamax, and this has resulted in a new branch clothing range becoming available.

Secondly, on attaining his level 1 qualification, bringing the total D.S.W.A accredited instructors to three, and thirdly, what he has created on the internet with regards to our new blog site can only be described as fantastic. He stepped in as secretary after Marcus had to sadly resign for personal reasons, and has really helped push the branch forward.

Major thanks must go out to both Gary and his father, John Helliwell, for enabling us to establish a new training site in Hoylandswaine, Barnsley. This has really been a huge success for us, as the branch development in this area of our boundary has gone through the roof. Another point is its ease of access, so much so that we are attracting new members from across the border in West Yorkshire.

A further exciting feature is that we are about to develop an examination centre at the site. This will enable the Craftsman Certification Scheme to be taken at all levels within our branch, which is sadly not available at Whirlow Hall Farm, BUT THE BRANCH IS GOING TO NEED A LOT OF HELP….

The Yorkshire Open Walling Competition took place in June. We had four members of the branch that competed, which resulted in 2 first prizes, a second and a third in two of the three classes.

Our demonstrations this year speak for themselves;

Emley Show with the W.Y. Branch; over 14,000 visitors, 5 branch members present.

Penistone Show; over 20,000 visitors, 12 branch members present.

Whirlow Hall Farm Fair; approximately 8,500 visitors, 8 branch members present.

Special thanks must go to the West Yorkshire branch for loaning their gazebo and show material. Also Johnson’s Quarries and Honley Skip Hire who generously contributed to our display at the Emley Show and we thank them for their support. Last but certainly not least I feel the branch owes a huge thanks to Eddy, Rob and John who gave up their time to prepare the for the Whirlow Hall Farm Fair, and returned after to clear the site.

With our training course fees being increased in line with other neighbouring branches, it was felt that the branch should provide a more professional image and offer value for money. As we were sadly lacking with regards to branch tools and materials, we decided to invest in new tools for branch training courses and practice meets. At the same time, we are developing the ‘Branch Shop’ to generate funds for the branch.

We have held 3 branch training courses since April, at both Whirlow Hall Farm and Hoylandswaine with a total of 22 trainees, of which 17 were beginners and 5 were improvers. A further one has taken place in collaboration with Penistone Grammar School involving 17 trainees, and due to the success of the shows that we have attended, we have been forced to put on another training course in November.

As the course fee now includes national membership, combined with the change in our constitution, by the end of the year we look set to have almost 60 new branch members, which will be an approximate 200% increase in membership in ten months!

A few problems that we have encountered this year, has been with regards to writing cheques and also with the contacting of our members. This has been because of a series of reasons , different database files held at head office, the changes of officers, the completed bank mandate with officer details going missing. These seemed to have been ironed out and we now envisage better collation with head office.

For many different reasons, we have had several members that have successfully taken craft certificates with other branches, however, in April we ran a ‘Mock’ exam day, with the real one the following week. This was warmly welcomed by the entrants, to the extent that we will be repeating this in late October.

There were a few problems earlier in the year with regards to Sandbeck Park. After initially having no point of contact, Mick Booth should be thanked for taking on the responsibility for the site and liasing with them. Because of the fact that it is our only limestone site, we I feel that we have to utilise this site better next year.

John Lackenby’s memorial has developed now to the stage that there is a plan for a convex series of seating/steps in the garden of the hall, where the visiting children can play, but also where teachers can gather the pupils together for teaching purposes.

I feel the focus of the branch over the winter months should be the construction of the memorial to John. Secondly, the development of the examination site at Hoylandswaine. I suggest that the way to pursue these projects would be to arrange sub-committees to help realise these projects.

In addition it has been noted that we need to provide more practice meets. This has not taken place as much as we would have liked this year do to a greater focus on training courses, but I suggest a way to help resolve this would be to run practice meets alongside the training courses, however, we will need more volunteers to come forward and help, but as there is already a ‘drop in’ facility running at Hoylandswaine, this would help address this.

Throughout the year we have worked well as a team. It has been a true team effort with officers, committee members and some of our newer members getting involved in the organisation of events. The three branch training courses to date would not have been run without everyone giving what time they could. No activities take place without someone working to organise them and because of the widening group of members coming forward and taking responsibility for different aspects we can be a little more ambitious next year.

I would like to end by thanking everyone who has contributed either as an officer or committee member for your valuable contribution to this year’s programme and feel sure that next years will be even more successful.

During a training course you can:

Learn the basic principles of dry stone walling
Contribute to the conservation of our valuable local dry stone walls
Enjoy working in the countryside in a structured but informal atmosphere
Be taught by accredited DSWA instructors and members of the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain

South Yorkshire Branch’s training courses offer structured tuition for men, women and young people in an informal atmosphere. All the instructors hold the DSWA Instructor’s Certificate and are members of the Association. At the beginning of the course you will meet your instructor and any assistants at an introductory welcome and briefing. The course teaches the basic principles of dry stone walling which will involve taking down (‘stripping out’) a derelict or damaged section of wall and rebuilding it to DSWA standards. You can work at your own pace and not under pressure.

These courses are open to anyone from teens to 80+, provided they are reasonably fit and well. Serious injuries in walling are rare, but care is needed when handling and working with stones to avoid back, hand, feet and eye injuries. Safety instruction and guidance will be given by the instructor.

All training courses run by South Yorkshire DSWA have public liability insurance to cover course members for injury and third party risks. Course participants should arrange their own personal insurance if they feel this is relevant.

The courses run from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm, unless stated otherwise in the course information.

Please bring a packed lunch and hot or cold drinks.

It is a good idea to bring a hat, sunblock and plenty of drinking water in hot weather.

There are male and female toilet facilities near the walling site.

Course information, a map giving directions and parking details will be sent to you upon receipt of a completed application form and payment. During the course you may be working away from the car park and consequently you are advised to keep your valuables with you.

Clothing

Appropriate clothing and protection will help you enjoy the event more. In addition to a robust jacket and over-trousers (for colder weather), layers of working clothes suitable for all weathers are recommended to protect against any dusty, muddy or wet conditions.

Many people, including professional wallers, find knee pads or a garden kneeler, a sensible form of protection (These can be purchased on site).

Strong, protective gloves are essential. PVC types are good for wet conditions (some people like to wear a thin lining glove inside). Thin cotton or suede gardening gloves will not last or give sufficient protection for stone work.

Footwear

Shoes or boots, ideally with reinforced toecaps for added protection.

If your footwear doesn’t have reinforced toecaps, wear the most robust protective footwear you possess with some thick socks.

Other Recommended Protective Items

It is recommended that protective safety glasses (provided for the duration of the course) are worn whenever walling hammers are used.

A personal First Aid kit including antiseptic wipes and plasters is useful.

All other tools and equipment will be provided for course members.

If you wish to bring some of your own tools (see list below) it is recommended that you mark them with coloured, weatherproof tape:

A walling hammer – not necessary at some events, but available from the South Yorkshire DSWA
A stong bucket for your ‘hearting’ stones (preferably rubber)
A retractable steel tape measure
A mattock and/or spade and/or shovel

The Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain (DSWA) , founded in 1968, is an expanding organisation which promotes the craft of dry stone walling, provides opportunities for the public to acquire knowledge of it, and seeks to ensure that the craft has a thriving future. The DSWA strives to promote high standards of workmanship and operates the only national, graded, skills certification scheme from Beginner to Master Craftsman standard. Members of the Association include male and female professional wallers, enthusiastic amateur wallers, stone suppliers, historians, farmers and environmentalists.

The DSWA has a national network of local branches. The South Yorkshire Branch serves the area around Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield, although a number of its members actually live further afield and people from all over the country have taken part in its training courses.

The training courses we operate take place throughout the year with structured tuition given for both men and women in an informal atmosphere. Everyone taking part is taught the basic principles of dry stone walling, working at their own pace.

Whirlow Hall Fair, Sept 2006

We demonstrated our walling craft at the Whirlow Hall Fair, Sheffield, building a short section of wall with a lunkey (a hole for sheep and other animals to get through the wall).

This gentleman carried a hod of bricks from Lands End to John O'Groats for charity. He has raised many thousands of pounds for charities and has also given a foster home to a lot of children. He is an amazing generous person and an example to us all.

The Penistone Show, 9th Sept 2006

It was a chilly misty start to the day with the grass wet with dew as we arrived at the Penistone Showground ready to do our bit for the 134th Penistone Show. There were people and cars darting here and there as stallholders and competitors raced to get their exhibits ready for the public arriving.

Luckily we had plenty of willing volunteers and it wasn't too long before we had the gazebo erected, leaflets arranged and a start on stripping out the wall. As they say, many hands make light work and we were building the foundations as the general public started filtering into the showground.

The day turned out to be beautifully warm and sunny. We couldn't have asked for a better day! We had pleanty of people visiting us, not only to watch the walling, but also asking questions and making general enquiries about our Branch activities and training courses. Our visitors included Barry and Bob who were on our last training course and Ian who is on our next course at Whirlow Hall Farm on 30th September, Tim from our West Yorkshire Branch and fellow members of other DSWA branches.

We have heard since, and the final count is still to be made, that they ran out of entry tickets for the show - all 18,000 of them; the cash machines in Penistone ran out of money, several food stalls ran out if food and to our horror the beer ran out at the refreshments tent!

The Branch Training Course 19-20th Aug 2006 at Hoylandswaine

The Branch held a training course this past weekend at Hoylandswaine, South Yorkshire and although the weather forecast said that we would get a thorough soaking for two days, we only got one good rain shower over the two days! There were three students for advanced training - Martin, Barry and his son Chris, who we set to building a wall head (or cheekend) under the watchful eye of Gary. Joe, Josh, Warren and Bob were new to walling and were taught how to strip a wall down and rebuild it under Les's instruction. Alan provided overall supervision and instruction and Mick and Tom kindly helped us all out.

The day started by stripping down the old wall which had started to fall into disrepair basically due to old age and land slippage.

The land having been prepared, the foundation stones are laid and the A frames double checked for accuracy by Alan.

The foundation stones are carefully positioned to give a stable platform on which to rebuild the wall.

Alan spots a flaw and shows the students how to overcome the problem.

The end of day one. The days walling is looked on by some tired, sweaty and aching trainees and instructors alike.

And now the best bit - Barry leads the dash to the bar at the Lord Nelson which is just over the road from where we were walling. Before we continue we must give a huge thank you to Paul and Scott and their staff at the Lord Nelson for their support and opening up the pub very early both mornings and feeding us with delicious bacon butties and cups of hot tea. Absolutely brilliant and most appreciated by us all. It's amazing how, at the end of the day, the aches and pains seem to subside after a couple of pints of Black Sheep Ale!!

Day 2 starts. We got off to an early start as the foundations took more time to build than we anticipated on Day 1. After a tea and butty break at the Lord Nelson we cracked on.

Gary's like a rash! He's all over the place teaching his more advanced student how to build cheek ends. Another special mention at this stage! Gary did most of the hard prep work for the course identifying the course site (his farm!) and getting stone and our walling equipment to the course location. He put in an awful lot of time and effort to make sure that this was a successful event. Thank you Gary!

Flush with success at building a nice piece of wall and a good cheek end, Barry tries, and fails, to impress chief instructor Alan with his elephant impression.

I think you'll agree that the standard of walling was very high considering 4 of the students had no previous experience of building walls. Or was it good instruction!?! Lets go for a mixture of the two!! The students should be very proud of their work as it was of a high standard - so well done to all of you!!

I think that all who were involved, student and instructor alike, had a great time with lots of laughs as well as lots of learning too! Thanks again to the Lord Nelson. Thanks to Alan for his tireless work for the South Yorks branch, his intructing, along with Gary and Les, and to Mick and Tom for giving up their valuable time to help out.

Emley Show Saturday August 5th 2006

Last Saturday we had the pleasure to provide a demonstration of dry stone walling with our colleagues from the West Yorkshire Branch of the DSWA, at the Emley Show. It was a beautiful, if not a bit too warm, day and we met lots of interesting people. We had a lot of interest in walling and many members of the public left the stand with information sheets and books. Roger was even interviewed for the radio – fame at last!

NB The August training course is now full, but we will take names as stand by in case someone drops out. Alternatively, we still have a few places left on the Sept 30^th course at Whirlow Hall Farm, Sheffield.

Here are a few photographs of the day, and thanks to all who helped out on the day – especially the lovely Claire who was chief ‘gofor’ in between the stand, the beer tent and the butty wagon!!

A very special thank you to Johnsons Wellfield Quarries for lending us the walling stone and to Honley Skip Hire for transporting it to and from the show.

Branch Meetings are every third Tuesday of the month at the Cock Inn, Birdwell at 20:00 Both members and non-members are most welcome.

Branch Training Courses are open to members and non-members for a modest charge (the charge to non DSWA members includes DSWA membership). Training Course Gift Vouchers can be purchased and can be used for any Branch Training Course, providing places are available - so book up early!! Details of costs and gift vouchers can be obtained from the Branch Secretary.

The next meeting of the South Yorkshire Dry Stone Walling Association will be on 20^th June at 20:00hrs at the Cock Inn, Birwell. I have attached a map but if you can’t read it or require directions, please email me at les@morgan-young.com and I’ll email you directions.

For those of you heading to the meeting direct from work, the Cock has home cooked food up until 20:00. It’s good fare at a reasonable price. It also has two regular cask beers and two guest cask ales – very nice!

The Branch will be holding a practice day at Green Top Farm, Hoylandswaine, Barnsley S36 7JS on Sunday 11th June 2006.

Please meet at the Lord Nelson pub Hoylandswaine at 09:45. You will need the usual safety wear (steel toe capped boots, goggles, etc) and a pack lunch, although the Lord Nelson serves food all day.
